Until some time ago, an editor’s instruments consisted in a grease pencil, a hand lens and a trained eye. That’s the way photography was for more than a century and, if the pencil and the glass have probably become useless in the digital age, the ability to “read” a photograph is necessary and remains the same. This column is based on the volumes Contatti – Provini d’autore (edited by Giammaria De Gasperis and Postcart Edizioni), in order to illustrate the process of picking an image, which is the result of a series of eliminations through the use of contact sheets, constantly studied by many photographers and photo-editors. The aim of this column is to tell you about the work and the stories of different authors through the analysis of their contact sheets.
